Electroshocking - Herrmann's Fish Farm

Electroshocking

The First Step

An electroshocking Survey is the first and most important step in pond and lake management to an existing population. This survey provides an accurate sampling of your fish populations as well as a total pond/lake assessment. We use only state-of-the-art electroshocking equipment and soft nets to ensure a proper survey is conducted. This method of surveying is very safe for both your fish and your pond/lake.

What is an electrofishing survey?

The conclusion of a survey provides the correct information for a complete pond/lake management report which will include; recommendations, overall health status of the pond/lake and fish, pond/lake cover and structure, water testing, targeted species to forage ratios, and relative weights. Relative weights are a standard of weight to length ratios that give us an accurate account of the health of the fish in your pond/lake.

How is electroshocking useful?

Electroshocking Survey can also be a useful tool for removing the recommended annual harvest of your targeted species, as well as removal of unwanted species such as Gar, Common Carp, Gizzard Shad, etc. The costs of electroshocking surveys vary, and are determined by size and accessibility of your pond/lake.

Electrofishing FAQ's

No. When conducting an electroshocking survey, fish are momentarily stunned, long enough for our aquatic biologists to safely net them up but not too long to harm them. In most cases, any fish that was not netted up by our biologists safely typically swims off in less than 60 seconds.

Depending on the frequency of electricity being generated, fish are stunned between 2-30 seconds.

Many factors go into a successful electroshocking survey. Salinity, conductivity, visibility and depth can be a reason affecting the results of your electroshocking survey.

As mentioned above, results of an electroshocking survey may differ depending on the quality of your water body. We can analyze a water sample if brought to us in person or by mail. Based on those results, we can determine whether or not a survey would provide successful results.
